老子, 영어번역 감칠맛 난다고 생각했는데......

TED를 보다가 노자를 인용한 댓글을 보게 되었고, 그 글들이 원문보다 오히려 더 감칠맛나기에....

이런! 세상에!  내 지금까지 노자의 도덕경을 몇 번씩이나 읽었는데, 처음 듣는 이야기가 이렇게 많지?

부끄러운 마음에, 도덕경 책을 다시 뽑아 들고, 처음부터 주의깊게 문장 하나하나 읽어가며 원문과 대조작업 벌여봤는데....

이 '번역'인지 '추측'인지가 잘못 된 것인지, 아니면, 내 이해도 아직 너무 짧아, 이 번역과 원문 사이의 거리를 채울 수 없는 것인지....

어쨌든 여기 있는 '토막 글'들 감칠맛 나는 것 사실이기에, 여기에 기록으로 남겨놓고 시간 나는대로 맞춰볼 생각.

(하지만, 뜬 구름같이 툭툭 던져놓은 이 문장들을 노자 원문과 대조시키기는 쉽지 않을 듯. 벌써 두번 왕복했는데...)

 

8.上善若水, 水善利萬物而不爭, 處衆人之所惡, 故幾於道, 居善地, 心善淵, 與善仁, 言善信, 正善治, 事善能, 動善時, 夫唯不爭, 故無尤.

이 8章이 그 유명한 上善若水 부분이고, 그 번역은 대충 아래와 같은데:

가장 좋은 것은 물과 같도다. 온갖 것을 이롭게 하면서도 다투지 않고, 모두가 싫어하는 낮은 곳으로도 흐른다. 그러므로 물은 道에 가깝다. 살 때는 물처럼 땅을 이롭게 하고, 마음을 쓸 때는 물처럼 깊게 하고, 사람을 사귈 때는 물처럼 어질게 하고, 말을 할 때는 물처럼 믿음을 주고, 정사를 돌볼 때는 물처럼 다스리고, 일을 처리할 때는 물처럼 능함을 보이고, 움직일 때는 물처럼 시기를 맞추어 좋게 하고, 한 결 같이 겨루는 일이 없으니 허물이 없도다.

혹 아래의 이 영문은 그 뜻을 대충이라도 전하려 의역한 것은 아닐른지....

 

"She does not show herself, and therefore is apparent.

She does not affirm herself, and therefore is acknowledged.

She does not boast and therefore has merit.

She does not strive and therefore is successful.

It is exactly because she does not contend, that nobody can contend with her."

 

33. 知人者智, 自知者明,  勝人者有力, 自勝者强, 知足者富,  强行者有志, 不失其所者久, 死而不亡者壽. 

"Knowing others is intelligence;  knowing yourself is true wisdom.

Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.

If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich."

 

56. 知者不言, 言者不知, 塞其兌, 閉其門, 挫其銳, 解其分, 和其光, 同其 塵, 是謂玄同, 故不可得而親, 不可得而疏, 不可得而利, 不可得而害, 不可得 而貴, 不可得而賤, 故爲天下貴.

"Those who know do not speak. Those who speak do not know."

 

64.其安易持, 其未兆易謀, 其脆易泮, 其微易散, 爲之於未有ㅡ 治之於未亂, 合抱之木, 生於毫末, 九層之臺, 起於累土, 千里之行, 始於足下, 爲者敗之, 執者失之, 是以聖人無爲故無敗, 無執故無失, 民之從事, 常於幾成而敗之, 愼終如始, 則無敗事, 是以聖人欲不欲, 不貴難得之貨, 學不學, 復衆人之所過, 以輔萬物之自然, 而不敢爲.

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

 

81. 信言不美, 美言不信, 善者不辯, 辯者不善, 知者不博, 博者不知, 聖人 不積, 旣以爲人, 己愈有, 旣以與人, 己愈多, 天之道, 利而不害, 聖人之道, 爲而不爭.  

"The truth is not always beautiful, nor beautiful words the truth."

 

73. 勇於敢則殺, 勇於不敢則活, 此兩者或利或害, 天之所惡, 孰知其故, 是 以聖人猶難之, 天之道, 不爭而善勝, 不言而善應, 不召而自來, 然而善謀, 天網恢恢, 疏而不失.  

"A man with outward courage dares to die; a man with inner courage dares to live."

 

44.名與身孰親, 身與貨孰多, 得與亡孰病, 是故甚愛必大費, 多藏必厚亡, 知足不辱, 知止不殆, 可以長久.

"Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are.

When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you."

 

68. 善爲士者不武, 善戰者不怒, 善勝敵者不與, 善用人者爲之下, 是謂不爭之德, 是謂用人之力, 是謂配天古之極.

17.太上下知有之, 其次親而譽之, 其次畏之, 其次侮之, 信不足焉, 有不信焉, 悠兮其貴言, 功成事遂, 百姓皆謂我自然.

As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence.

The next best, the people honor and praise.

The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate ...

When the best leader's work is done the people say,

We did it ourselves!"

 

48. 爲學日益, 爲道日損, 損之又損, 以至於無爲, 無爲而無不爲, 取天下, 常以無事, 及其有事, 不足以取天下. 

"To attain knowledge, add things everyday. To attain wisdom, remove things every day."

  여기에선 뜻이 전혀 다르게 와전된 듯.

  학문을 하면 할수록 할 일이 많아지고, 도를 행하면 할수록 할일이 줄어든다.

  줄고 또 줄어서 마침내는 無爲에 이르고....

  이런 뜻인데....   

 

71. 知, 不知, 上, 不知, 知, 病, 夫唯病病, 是以不病, 聖人不病, 以其病病, 是以不病.

"To know that you do not know is the best.

To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease."

 

49.聖人無常心, 以百姓心爲心, 善者吾善之, 不善者吾亦善之, 德善, 信者吾信之, 不信者吾亦信之, 德信, 聖人在天下, 爲天下渾其心, 聖人皆孩之.

"Respond intelligently even to unintelligent treatment"

 

46.天下有道, 走馬以糞, 天下無道, 戎馬生於郊, 禍莫大於不知足, 咎莫大於欲得, 故知足之足常足矣.

"Loss is not as bad as wanting more."

 

76. 人之生也柔弱, 其死也堅强, 萬物草木之生也柔脆, 其死也枯槁, 故堅强 者死之徒, 柔弱者生之徒, 是以兵强則不勝, 木强則兵, 强大處下, 柔弱處上.  

"Men are born soft and supple; dead they are stiff and hard.

Plants are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and dry.

Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death. Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life.
